PAL 2- BFA Collaborative exhibtion- Gather'round: Giving Form to Folklore. (OCT. 2022)

Updated: May 10, 2023

Rationale:

After being an oiffical canidate for the BFA program at Illinios State University, I collaborated with my fellow BFA peers and created an exhibition that followed the theme of folklores.

Discripition:

Before you see Maria crying at a river bank you will hear her. She has a certain cry that makes you guilty if you ignore it. It is the type of cry you want to comfort and ask "what's wrong?". If you are a man she'll drown as vengeance against José.

If you are a woman, she'll tell you to take good care of your children if you have any because she has lost hers.

If you are a child, she'll never want you to leave. So much so that she might even pull you into the water.

When entering the exhibition the viewer will hear the sound of a baby crying with subtle noises of water. However, the noise is blocked from walls around it. In order for the viewer to see where the source is from they'll have to confront Maria to begin with (just like in the myth). However, the viewer will soon turn over and notice that Maria isn't there for the viewer. Maria has an ofrenda in memory of her sons and children that have passed. I purposely light up the candles for today and tomorrow as it is Día de los Muertos. (Nov1-2.) Other than that, I won't light the candles up any other day.
